The Starry Night [i]

The Imaginary Entity [i]

In The Imaginary Entity [i] project, we explore new perspectives and the fusion of realities using AI. We engage in a digital dialogue with Van Gogh’s work, adding our insights to create digital artworks that merge physical and digital worlds, bridging past and present.

We infuse our own insights and creativity into this digital dialogue, resulting in fused digital artworks. These pieces narrate the interplay between physical and digital worlds, exploring the perception of past and present realities. Various themes that inspired Van Gogh also inspire us. Today, we invite you into the world of The Starry Night.

Exploring The Starry Night

Vincent van Gogh’s The Starry Night, created in 1889, is one of his masterpieces. Painted while he stayed at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum, it captures the night sky over a French village with swirling, expressive brushstrokes. Though painted during the day, Van Gogh used his memory to depict the night.

Van Gogh’s The Starry Night

Though The Starry Night depicts a night scene, Van Gogh painted it during the day. Obsessed with capturing a nocturnal landscape from memory, he created the swirling sky and exploding stars. The large cypress in the foreground seems to move, enhancing the turbulent sky with rhythmic, feverish brushstrokes.

Art historians have explored its elements through literature, astronomy, and religion. Some believe it reflects Van Gogh’s heightened emotional state, meditating on life, death, and the infinite universe. The swirling patterns may symbolize nature’s life force, which some call God.

Van Gogh wrote to his brother Theo about the stars:

THE DEEP BLUE SKY WAS SPOTTED WITH CLOUDS OF A DEEPER BLUE THAN THE 'GROUNDED BLUE' OF INTENSE COBALT, AND OTHERS WITH A LIGHTER BLUE LIKE THE MILKY WAY’S BLUE WHITENESS. AGAINST THE BLUE BACKGROUND, THE STARS TWINKLED BRIGHTLY, GREEN, YELLOW, WHITE, PINK, BRIGHTER, MORE DIAMOND-LIKE, MORE LIKE PRECIOUS STONES FROM HOME.

Our Connection to Diamonds

Van Gogh’s mention that “the stars shone like diamonds” resonated with us, linking to our project One and 2.442 diamonds.  In this project, we created a 3D diamond with a higher refractive index than found in nature. Van Gogh’s vision, marked by the shifting play of light and color, struck us through his letters to Theo. This shared wonder inspires us continually, bringing Van Gogh to life in a modern context.  The Starry Night blends direct observation and memory, reflecting our approach.

Collaborative Creation with AI

Using guided artificial intelligence, we fused quotes from Van Gogh’s letters and images of his drawings and paintings. This process merged Studio KASBOEK and Van Gogh into a new imaginative entity. This collaboration allows us to work as one artist, engaging with Van Gogh’s legacy using the latest technology. Each AI-generated image builds on the previous one, reflecting Van Gogh’s dedication to practice. Our animated “The Starry Night” images bring movement and life to his dreams in the digital age.

James Webb Photography

During our creative process, we encountered the new, clear images of the universe from James Webb photography. We believe Van Gogh would have been enchanted by these cosmic views. Thus, we combined elements from Vincent’s “The Starry Night,” our diamond project, and the universe to create this series.
